The Genomics and Complex Diseases research group at IIB Sant Pau is looking for a PhD student and a young postdoc (thesis defended after 1/1/2017) with a data scientist profile (bioinformatics/biostatistics) to work within the FIS project Cancer and Thrombosis.

Project on Cancer and Thrombosis:

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious and common complication in patients with cancer, representing the second cause of death among them. Current predictive models to identify cancer patients at high risk for VTE are based on clinical data and show little predictive capacity. Our project aim is to provide health care professionals with efficient tools to improve diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) that will ultimately reduce VTE-related morbidity and mortality. More concretely, we will achieve this goal through combine an ambitious and innovative program with a unique collection of well-phenotyped cohorts with an innovative strategy based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) models to generate a prediction score (based on clinical and genomic (GWAS) data) that will be integrated in an eHealth Platform (electronic Cancer-Associated Thrombosis; eCAT). It is important to highlight that eCAT eHealth platform will enhance patient-clinician interactions and patient empowerment, providing comprehensive clinical care in prevention of CAT that will improve the quality of life of cancer patients. This translational approach, which fits the concept of Precision Medicine, will therefore allow to go beyond the current knowledge of VTE risk prediction in oncology that will undoubtedly improve diagnosis, prevention and treatment of CAT and will help to reduce morbidity and mortality. Then, the expected results of ONCOTHROMB project will have great impact in scientific, clinical and social domains improving the quality of life of oncology patients with a direct applicability that will change clinical practice and therefore, have great impact on the National Health System.
