The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 770 staff from 55 countries.

Context And Mission

The Life Sciences Department (https://www.bsc.es/discover-bsc/organisation/scientific-structure/life-sciences) is composed of 6 research groups and 6 technical units covering the main areas of Computational Biology and bioinformatics, including genome analysis and annotation structural bioinformatics, network biology and text mining. The Department hosts the coordination and technical nodes of the Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB-ISCIII) node of ELIXIR. Overall, the department has as common goal the technical, computational and scientific challenges in the field of Personalized Medicine.

The mission of this role is in the framework of the recent growth of the Life Sciences Department and will collaborate with the Bioinformatics Coordination Unit in terms of cross-department activities and needs, including organization of recruitment processes, outreach activities and follow-up of financial matters. This candidate will also contribute to the Bioinfo4Women programme (https://bioinfo4women.bsc.es/), monitoring its activities and proactively contributing to bring it forward in a professional manner. The selected candidate will work within the Life Sciences Department but also closely with the BSC Project Management Office.

Key Duties

  • Technical support to the cross-department strategic research projects and activities, internal and external, including the PhD committees and keeping the Department website updated.
  • Monitoring and vigilance of the evolution of open issues at the Department level (financial, HR, Department activities, etc.), maintaining regular interactions with Principal Investigators.
  • Provide support to Life Sciences PIs and senior researchers in talent recruitment processes and financial matters, in coordination with the research support departments in the BSC.
  • Help researchers in the Department in the preparation of scientific presentations, based on pre-existing materials, to general audiences (e.g. Department presentations to external stakeholders).
  • Provide technical support to the management of strategic projects (pending actions, meeting minutes, etc.).
  • Monitor and contribute to Bioinfo4Women activities, in close collaboration with its Executive Committee and volunteer Working Groups, including management of the Pilot Mentoring Programme and organization of B4W activities.
  • Monitor personnel at the Computational Biology group (http://life.bsc.es/compbio) with regards to training needs, opportunities for predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships, timing for presentations/seminars at the group and Department levels, etc.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Master degree on Biomedical/IT sectors, or equivalent professional experience in such sectors in academia.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Minimum 1 year experience on a similar role.
    • Familiarity with academic environments and their specific needs.
    • Project management skills: reporting, documenting and planning.
    • Excellent command of tools to prepare well-structured written documents and presentations.
    • Proficient computer skills, and the ability to maintain an organized and clean digital environment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish (Catalan is a plus).
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Scientific contribution to the Bioinformatics area.
    • Experience in the writing and technical coordination of national and international research projects in the biomedical area.
    • Experience in technical and financial reporting of research projects.
    • Experience in events organisation (small-medium size, from 30 to up to 180 people).
    • A PhD in the biomedical sector or experience in the Bioinformatics area is a plus.
    • Experienced in the recruitment process to incorporate talented researchers.
