The Platform for Computational Medicine from the Fundación Progreso y Salud (FPS) announces the 5-day course "GATK Workshop 2023: From reads to diagnostic and seconday findings" that will take place in Granada from the 13th to the 17th of November, 2023.

Massive sequencing is becoming mainstream in many fields of biomedicine, including clinical practice. However, managing sequencing raw data to transform them into valuable biological information on variants and their further interpretation is still a complex task that requires intensive computing and trained personnel.

This 5-day training, with instructors from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard - GATK team (Boston, USA), covers all the steps from the raw sequencing data produced by the sequencers to the obtention of lists of variants using the popular GATK software. The 4-day GATK workshop is followed by a last-day tutorial on tertiary analysis (diagnostic and secondary findings) using the tools developed by the Platform of Computational Medicine. GATK workshops are designed to provide a comprehensive onboarding experience to new users and access to a more advanced understanding for users already familiar with the toolkit.

Course title: GATK Workshop 2023: From reads to diagnostic and secondary findings - Granada, Spain

When: 13th to the 17th of November, 2023

Where:  IAVANTE CMAT (Complejo Multifuncional Avanzado de Simulación e Innovación Tecnológica). Health Sciences Technology Park (Parque Tecnológico de la Salud). 21, Avenida de la Investigación, 18016 Granada, Spain

Cost: 180 EUR (includes access to the course, coffee break (Mon-Fri) and lunch (Mon-Thu))

Target audience: Mixed audience of people who are new to the topic of variant discovery or to GATK, seeking an introductory course into the tools, or are already GATK users seeking to improve their understanding and proficiency with the tools.

Pre-requisites: Participants should already be familiar with genetics and genomics' basic terms and concepts. Basic familiarity with the command line environment is required. Participants will be expected to bring their own laptops with software preinstalled (detailed instructions will be posted two weeks before the course) unless the workshop host provides a computer lab.

Contents scope: This workshop is focused on human data analysis. The majority of the materials presented do apply equally to non-human data, and we will address some questions regarding adaptations that are needed for the analysis of non-human data. Still, we will not go into much detail on those points.

Capacity limit: Attendance is typically limited to 30 or 40 participants, depending on the number of trainers and available room size.

Pre-registration: Open application with selection of participants limited to the room capacity. Pre-registration does not guarantee a place in the workshop. Selected candidates will be notified by October 13th.

Stay up to date: If you are interested in receiving the latest updates about the workshop, please send an email to the organisers at support@clinbioinfosspa.es
