Open faculty positions @ Politecnico di Milano Computer Science and Engineering focused on Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics

Call for Computer Science & Engineering Faculty positions on Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics

The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria, DEIB, of the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy (see http://www.deib.polimi.it/ for more information) has recently undertaken a strategy of internationalization of its own Faculty. As part of this general effort, we are in the process of collecting applications (expressions of interest) for positions of Associate Professor in our Department. Eligible candidates must hold a passport other than Italian (this may include double citizenships), and the associate professorship should be in the Computer Science research area of Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics.

Milan area is highly active and dynamic in genomic research, with many relevant centres and the forthcoming Human Technolpole (https://www.htechnopole.it/). Politecnico di Milano has research collaborations with several of them and host multiple European funded project, including the ERC Advanced Grant “GeCo” (Data-Driven Genomic Computing) (Sept. 2016 - Aug. 2021) (http://www.bioinformatics.deib.polimi.it/geco/), focused on the management and analysis of genomic data. GeCo aims at building a powerful data computing infrastructure at the receiving end of DNA sequencing machines, for enabling viewing, querying, analysing, mining, and searching over a world-wide available collection of genomic data. Furthermore, Politecnico di Milano (PoliMI) and University of Milan (UniMI) are currently engaged in preparing a joint Master Degree on Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics, with mayor involvement of DEIB (PoliMI) and Bioscience (UniMI) (http://eng.dbs.unimi.it/ecm/home) Departments.

Candidates should already hold a position of Associate Professor in a University outside of Italy, thereby enabling an internal selection process. Alternatively, the candidate must first apply for and be granted the qualification (“Abilitazione Nazionale”) for Associate Professor in an Italian University from the Italian Ministry of Instruction, University and Research (MIUR) at the earliest evaluation round. Information on the “Abilitazione Nazionale” procedure can be found at: http://abilitazione.miur.it/public/index.php?lang=eng

Successful candidates will be asked to actively contribute to the activities of the Department in terms of:

  1. Research: by exercising their leadership in the definition, promotion and coordination of research projects from Industry as well as National or International funding Agencies; and by disseminating their scientific results through high-profile publications.
  2. Teaching: by holding courses (at Bachelor and/or Master level) up to 120 hrs/yr. Candidates will also be encouraged to contribute to didactic activities for Ph.D. and extension programs.

The initial annual gross salary of 51.000 € will increase progressively based on seniority, but can also be augmented significantly through project research activities.

For further information, please contact Profs. Stefano Ceri (stefano.ceri@polimi.it) and Marco Masseroli (marco.masseroli@polimi.it).

Applications must be sent via email to eoi-deib@polimi.it, and must include a complete CV, a brief description of the candidate’s research interests, and a letter describing the candidate’s vision of how to contribute to the Department activities. Applications must be received by June 25, 2018.
