About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 770 staff from 55 countries.

Context And Mission

ELIXIR (European Life Science Infrastructure for Biological Information) is a pan-European organization founded in 2014 which aims to integrate and harmonize European bioinformatics infrastructures. ELIXIR coordinates the participation of more than 20 countries, engages with other strategic European initiatives and projects e.g. ESFRI, Research Data Alliance, EUDat, EGI; promotes specific training activities and workshops on ELIXIR resources, partners with industry, and play a key role in shaping the bioinformatics landscape. Spain has been a member of ELIXIR since 2015, with the INB as the Spanish national node. Within ELIXIR, the INB is responsible for the bioinformatics infrastructure offered by Spain and therefore, should guarantee its alignment to the strategic areas put forward by ELIXIR.

Indeed, the INB was renovated for the period 2018 – 2021 with two overarching objectives: to increase the alignment of its activities with ELIXIR and increase the translational impact of INB actions on the Spanish National Health System (SNS). For the latter objective, the INB has created and supported TransBioNet (Translational Bioinformatics Network) which aims to structure, bring together and work with bioinformatics groups in healthcare settings with a particular focus on the Health Research Institutes (IIS) recognized by the ISCIII. Since 2021, the INB has continued its activities in the context of the IMPaCT-Data programme. IMPaCT is the recently launched Infrastructure for Personalized Medicine associated with Science and Technology by the ISCIII.

OpenEBench, an initiative developed within the ELIXIR European infrastructure, aims to provide a permanent platform to support benchmarking in bioinformatics. OpenEBench provides, on one hand, support to scientific communities to perform a critical evaluation of the scientific performance of methods and tools in specific domains. On the other hand, OpenEBench maintains a Tools Monitoring section, holding updated metadata for bioinformatics tools extracted from data sources like bio.tools, bioconda, and Galaxy among others, and providing live analysis of a number of metrics regarding availability, documentation or license availability, among others. The ultimate goal of OpenEBench is to provide an observatory of the quality of the Life Sciences research software, which can provide an overall view of the field and support the generation of development best practices and their progressive adoption.
